around 2013/14 X started paying attention to how pop music sometimes deliberately asserts or affirms the place of the singer or the person they address in the lyrics - 'here i stand' etc. / X was thinking that maybe this is part of what it is about listening to pop that helps them to ground and direct their sense of self and agency - pop listening as a self-situating / they thought that maybe this also comes through the way that the performance space is produced and that the vocalist is centred in mixes - addressing the listener directly and sometimes intimately / when X listened they would sometimes feel engaged by the singer like a trusted friend and sometimes feel as if they themselves were the singer / it occurred to them that in their lived experience of post-internet smartphone-in-your-pocket groundlessness and placelessness new pop or even all pop carries this special power to situate - to speak through a combined vocal-textual and sonic-spatial language of positional certainty and in so doing cut through the confusion of their mediated everyday entanglements with identity and social life / X started to consider and consciously use pop records as spatial narratives that assert the self-certainty of an emotional subject in liminal space and time / or rather they started to understand that they had always being doing this which is why the records they loved brought them such agency strength and power
